Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships
Canada's flagship doctoral award. You cannot apply directly — a Canadian institution with a quota must nominate you, which makes the internal deadline the one that matters.

What Vanier CGS is
The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships programme was launched by the Government of Canada in 2008 to strengthen Canada’s ability to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and to establish Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning. It is administered jointly by Canada’s three federal research agencies — the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
It is open to both Canadian and international doctoral candidates, which is unusual among national flagship awards, and it funds doctoral study at Canadian institutions across the health, natural sciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities.
The nomination rule — read this before anything else
Candidates cannot apply directly
You must be nominated by a Canadian institution that holds a Vanier quota, and you may be nominated by only one institution. There is no route by which an individual submits an application to the programme on their own behalf.
What this means in practice: the competition you actually have to win is internal, at the university that would host you, and it runs on that university’s own timetable — typically months before the national deadline. Every year, strong candidates discover the programme after the institutional deadline has passed and lose a full cycle for a purely procedural reason.
Institutional quotas are limited, which means universities nominate a small number of candidates from a much larger pool of interested applicants. Your practical task is therefore to become the candidate a department wants to spend one of its scarce nominations on — and that is a relationship-and-timing problem as much as an academic one.
Eligibility essentials
- You must be pursuing your first doctoral degree. Joint programmes such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD and MBA/PhD are included where they have a demonstrated and significant research component.
- You must be nominated by a single Canadian institution with a Vanier quota.
- There are limits on how far into your doctoral programme you may be when you take up the award, expressed in months of completed study. These are enforced precisely and are a common disqualifier — check the current window on the eligibility page against your own registration dates.
- Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international candidates are all eligible, subject to the programme’s current rules.
What the award provides
Vanier provides a substantial annual doctoral award for a defined number of years of study. The programme publishes the value and duration on its site; we do not reproduce figures that are set by the programme and revised over time. A limited number of scholarships are awarded each year and a capped number are active at any time, which is why institutional quotas exist.
How to actually get nominated
- Approach the department early — a year ahead is not too early Identify prospective supervisors whose work genuinely overlaps yours and open a conversation about doctoral study and about Vanier specifically.
- Find the institution’s internal Vanier deadline Almost every Canadian research university publishes one on its graduate studies or research services pages. This date governs you.
- Build the file against the three published criteria Academic excellence, research potential, and leadership (potential and demonstrated). The third is weighted equally with the others and is where most science and engineering candidates under-invest.
- Secure strong, specific references Vanier requires referees who can compare you against a peer group. Generic praise is scored low against the criteria.
- Write the research proposal for a multidisciplinary panel Vanier committees span disciplines. A proposal only a subfield specialist can evaluate does not score well.
- Submit through the institution The university compiles and forwards the nomination to the national competition.
The leadership criterion
Vanier assesses leadership as a distinct, equally weighted criterion, and it means something specific: evidence of leadership and of the potential to lead, demonstrated through activities such as academic and professional service, mentoring and supervision, community involvement, and the ability to think and act beyond one’s immediate research.
Because it is assessed on evidence, it must be built over time rather than assembled at application. If you are a year out, this is the criterion to act on now: take on the departmental role, run the seminar series, supervise the undergraduate project, publish the outreach piece. If you are applying imminently, describe what you have done with specifics — scale, duration, your actual role, what changed — rather than listing memberships.
Warnings
- You cannot self-nominate, and no third party can nominate you either.
- Only one institution may nominate you. Approaching several and being put forward by two invalidates the nomination.
- The months-of-study eligibility window is strict and is calculated from your doctoral registration, not from your intent.
- The internal deadline is the real deadline. The national date is not yours to work to.
- Vanier is not the only Canadian route. The tri-agency Canada Graduate Scholarships and institutional awards run alongside it and have separate processes.
